Trial Reels - Share to Everyone, or Leave it in Trial?

Trial Reels: Share to Everyone, or Leave It in Trial?

An advisor asked us this recently, and it's a good one:

"If we have a reel in trial, is it best to 'share to everyone' after the trial period is over, or repost it normally and keep the reel in trial?"

Kyla's answer: it depends on the results.

That's it. That's the whole strategy. But before we get into why, let's back up for a second, because that answer only makes sense once you know what a trial reel actually is.

When you post a reel in trial, Instagram shows it to non-followers first, people who don't follow you, have never seen your content, and have zero reason to engage besides the content itself. Your existing followers don't see it, not yet. You get a window of real performance data before the reel ever reaches the people who already know and trust you.

Why does that matter?

Because it strips out all the bias. Your followers are going to engage with your content more just because they already like you, they've decided you're worth watching. That's not a fair test of whether a piece of content actually works. Trial reels are. Think of it as a preview screening before opening night. You get honest reactions from a crowd that has no reason to be nice about it.

How Do You Post a Trial Reel?

Setting one up is easy, and if you haven't tried it yet, here's what that actually looks like. When you go to post a reel, you'll see a toggle in the creation flow that says "Trial." Turn it on before you share, and Instagram automatically shows that reel to non-followers first instead of pushing it out to your full audience right away. From there, you just wait. Instagram will show you performance data over the trial period, watch time, reach, engagement, so you can actually see how it's doing before you commit to anything.

So once the trial period ends, you're not just flipping a switch. You're making a decision based on what you learned:

Did it do well? Share it to everyone. It already passed the hardest test, strangers with no reason to watch. Now see how it does with the audience that already knows and trusts you.

Did it flop? Leave it. Don't push a weak reel out just because the clock ran out. Instead, try a new version, different hook, different opening line, different vibe, and run that one through trial instead. That's literally what the feature is built for: testing multiple versions until one earns its way to your full audience.

The advisors who get the most out of trial reels aren't the ones posting and waiting. They're the ones treating every trial like a mini experiment, and only pushing out the version that actually proved itself.

So next time a trial ends, don't ask "is the time up?" Ask "did this work?" That question is the whole strategy.
