Instagram Hashtags Have Changed: Here's What You Need To Know

When people think about growing their Instagram, they often think of stacking up thirty hashtags, crossing their fingers, and hoping the algorithm magically delivers a flood of dream clients. They look for that secret list of words that will suddenly put their travel business in front of thousands of eager travelers.

But if you’ve looked at your Instagram insights lately, you might have noticed something frustrating. The data has changed. The old metrics are gone.

Recently inside our community, a travel advisor named Jamie asked a question that so many advisors are secretly stressing about:

"Instagram used to show you what got you high engagement, like which hashtags were the most successful. Does it still do that? I can only see things like number of views, demographics and amount of time viewed."

The short answer? No, it doesn't. But the why behind this change is actually the key to unlocking more traffic for your travel business.

Understanding how the platform has evolved goes far beyond just missing old analytics. It’s about adjusting your strategy so your content actually gets found.

Here’s a look at what’s changing and how to navigate it.

From Search Tool to Categorization Tool

Instagram phasing out specific hashtag tracking isn't a glitch. It’s a reflection of how much the platform's search engine has grown up.

In the past, hashtags were the primary way your ideal clients found your content. A traveler would type #LuxuryTravelAdvisor into the search bar, scroll through the chronological feed, and stumble upon your business.

Today, the algorithm operates entirely differently.

The way I always teach it to advisors inside my programs is this:

  • The Old Way: "What hashtags can I use so my ideal audience can search and find this post?"

  • The New Way: "What terms can I use to tell Instagram how to categorize this content so it knows who to serve it to?"

Hashtags aren't dead, but their job description has changed. Instead of acting as a direct bridge to your client, they act as an organizational tag for Instagram's backend system. They help the platform understand that your Reel is about destination weddings in Italy and not backpacking through Asia.

The New Formula: How to Drive Traffic Now

When Jamie realized the analytics had shifted, her immediate next question was the exact one you are probably asking right now: “How to drive up more traffic then??”

The answer isn't to search for a brand-new hack. It comes down to a simple, reliable formula: Keywords + Hashtags + Strategic Content.

Instead of obsessing over a giant block of hashtags at the bottom of your post, you need to focus heavily on Instagram SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

Instagram acts much more like Google than it used to. When a traveler types "best all-inclusive resorts in Mexico" into the search bar, Instagram scans captions, audio tracks, and on-screen text for those exact words.

To drive traffic today, you need to write captions using the natural language your clients use. Stop trying to write short, cryptic phrases and start using clear, searchable keywords throughout your descriptions.

The "First Comment" Strategy for Keywords and Engagement

During this exact conversation in our group, another advisor, Jenney, pointed out a brilliant trend she’d been seeing: “I’ve seen some people posting comments on their own posts. I assume this is to help with keywords? Kyla, do you know if this helps?”

It absolutely helps, and it's a strategy you should start using today!

Leaving the first comment on your own post serves two massive purposes for your travel business:

  • It injects extra keywords: If you ran out of space in your main caption or want to keep it looking clean, putting additional searchable keywords and a few relevant hashtags in the comments gives the algorithm extra data to crawl.

  • It kickstarts the engagement conversation: Instead of just dropping a caption and walking away, use that first comment to make your Call to Action (CTA) stand out.

For example, instead of burying a question at the very bottom of a long text block, drop it as the very first comment: "Have you ever been on a river cruise before? Let me know below!" It immediately separates your question from the main text, catches the user's eye, and actively encourages your followers to respond.

More Than Just Stacking Hashtags

Social media updates can feel overwhelming, especially when the metrics you used to rely on suddenly disappear. But every time a platform shifts, it's an opportunity to outsmart the competition who are still relying on outdated strategies.

Stop stressing over which individual hashtag brought you three extra views.

Focus on writing clear, keyword-rich captions. Focus on creating strategic content that solves your clients' travel problems. And keep finding creative ways to get the human conversation started.

The algorithm will keep changing, but clear communication and real engagement will always win the client!
